Important Update on Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) for Weight Management

We are aware of recent media reports suggesting that Mounjaro (tirzepatide), a new weight-loss medication, is now available on the NHS.

While NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) has approved Mounjaro for a specific group of patients, those aged over 18 with a BMI ≥ 40 (or ≥ 37.5 for people from Black, Asian or other minority ethnic backgrounds) and at least four weight-related health conditions such as:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Dyslipidaemia (abnormal cholesterol/fat levels)
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Cardiovascular disease

This treatment is not yet available to prescribe in general practice in Norfolk and Waveney.

Our local Integrated Care Board (ICB) has not yet commissioned a service that allows GPs to prescribe Mounjaro. Instead, they are currently working towards commissioning a community weight management service that may provide access to such treatments in the future.

What This Means for You

  • We are unable to prescribe Mounjaro at this time.
  • If you have queries or wish to express interest in the availability of this treatment, you may contact Norfolk and Waveney ICB directly.
  • Please do not contact the surgery to request this medication. It is not currently available to us for prescribing.
  • We will continue to support our patients with weight management using the tools currently available, including lifestyle support and referrals to appropriate services.
  • We will contact eligible patients directly once a clear prescribing pathway is in place.

Thank you for your understanding.
